ADVANCED plans are in place for a revamped Southend Triathlon.

Last year’s first running of the event proved to be extremely popular along the seafront.

But Alex Parren - one of the triathlon’s organisers - is keen to make this summer’s race even more successful.

“Plans are going really well and we’re really excited about it,” said Parren.

“We’ve got a different route this year and it will be on closed roads along the seafront, which means it will be better for the bike route.

“It will be much better for spectators and we are expecting thousands of them on the day again.

“Last year the swim was 500metres but this year it will be 750m, which is the full amount for a sprint distance triathlon.

“The swim will be out and back by Uncle Tom’s Cabin and the run is the same as the parkrun route in Shoebury, which I’m sure plenty of people know, so we’re really pleased with the improvements.”

The triathlon will take place in Southend on Sunday, June 17.

And this year’s event will also be open for more budding triathletes.

“There are twice as many places this year,” said Parren.

“Last year we had room for 300 and this year it’s 600.

“We’re expecting more spectators this year and we’re looking to build on last year, which we were really happy with.

“Last year went really well and we were pleased.

“We got great feedback and had no complaints from any local businesses and the council were really on board too.

“We’re working closely with the council and the pier manager and they have been fantastic in helping us out, so it’s going to be a great event for the local community.”

More than 450 triathletes have already signed up to take part in this year’s event.

And Parren believes the race is perfect for anyone wanting to try out the sport.

“There are only 150 places left and this really is ideal for your first triathlon,” said Parren.

“It’s really flat and the sea will be a nice temperature in the summer too.

“We often hear people saying they don’t think they could do a triathlon for one reason or another but this really is the perfect one even for anyone wanting to dip their toe in the world of triathlon.”

But there will also be plenty going on around the race.

“There will be food, drink and music, so it will be like a mini festival really,” said Parren.

“It’s something people won’t want to miss out on and there will be a real buzz on the day too.

“We’ve got a number of local companies and gyms on board as well so it will be a child friendly day too.

“It will be a great day out for the whole family and we’re already looking forward to it.”
