JOHN Wayne Hibbert admits he may not return to the boxing arena following the death of Scott Westgarth.

The Horndon-on-the-Hill fighter was set to take on Curtis Woodhouse last Saturday in the headline bout at the Doncaster Dome.

However, the fight never got started after Westgarth collapsed in his dressing room after beating Dec Spelman, with the medical staff heading to hospital with the fighter.

And following a fight for life in hospital, Westgarth died on Monday.

Hibbert, 33, admitted he wanted to bring an end to his boxing career having initially heard the news, but now says he has some ‘serious thinking to do’ about his future in the sport.

“My partner, myself and my team left Doncaster at about 7.30am on Sunday and I was gutted not to box. But then I heard the news and I felt sick and I was adamant I was done with it [boxing],” said Hibbert.

“I’ve got two little kids and it’s a hard game.

“But at the moment it’s raw and I will have a serious think about it. I feel in great shape and I honestly believe this was the best I had ever felt heading into a fight.

“But then it hits home. I have eight-year-old Lexie and five-year-old Connor to think about and they are getting old enough to understand more about what I do.

“I won’t make any rash decisions like I did after I initially heard the news but I have had a few phone calls about some promising big fights.

“I have a lot to think about.”

And former footballer Woodhouse echoed Hibbert’s thoughts.

“I am not sure whether I want to even fight again and go through it all again,” he told TalkSport.

“An hour earlier, I was speaking to Scott in the dressing room wishing him the best for the fight and he loses his life that evening. It makes you feel numb.”
