SOUTH Essex Gymnastics Club’s Brinn Bevan says he goes into the World Cup of Gymnastics full of confidence.

Bevan was triumphant at the British Championships last weekend.

And the newly-crowned British all-around champion is looking forward to being tested at the World Cup of Gymnastics, which will be held in Stuttgart, Germany, this weekend.

Bevan said: “Heading into the Stuttgart World Cup, I have obviously got a little bit of confidence from winning the British Championships.

“But, ultimately, my aim is to go out there and enjoy myself.

“It’s my first time back on the world stage, so it will be interesting to see how I rank up against the rest of the world compared to how I did last year at the World Cup of Gymnastics.”

The former Deanes School pupil scored 84.400 in the British Championships’ all-around final after successfully completing some difficult routines.

And the 20-year-old still cannot believe that he is the British champion.

Bevan, who competed at the 2016 Olympic Games, added: “It’s pretty crazy having people call me the British champion after the year that I’ve had.

“I injured myself heading into 2017, so I had been off for nearly a year.

“It’s been a massive battle in itself to get back and be fighting fit.

“My first competition back was the English Championships, where I made a couple of mistakes but still managed to come third overall.

“I had a little bit more experience heading into the British Championships because I obviously competed in that one competition but I didn’t expect anything like this.

“It’s great to have come away as the British champion.”

And Bevan is pleased to be back in action after a torrid spell of injuries.

The Thundersley-born gymnast, who has been with South Essex since the age of three, admitted: “It was an extremely difficult period for me.

“There were a few competitions that I wanted to compete in last year, but I actually missed out on the European Championships and the World Championships.

“I was hoping for a better result from the World Cup of Gymnastics as well, but I injured myself before the competition and didn’t know what I had done until afterwards.

“But it shows a lot of character, grit and determination from me to come back.

“It’s not the first time I’ve come back from an injury and I know that I usually can come out on top.”
