Second string stickmen show form

SOUTHEND'S higher teams enjoyed a good weekend.

While the men’s firsts were seeing off Witham 4-2 in East Two south-east, the second team were triumphing 7-2 over the third side from the same club.

And the ladies’ firsts triumphed 2-1 at Brentwood.

In the first team match.

Neil Utton’s hat-trick earned him man of the match honours and James Beardwell also netted.

Currently seventh of 12 teams, the firsts go to Bishop’s Stortford on Saturday.

The second team were without Rob Styles (working), Mike Fallows (shoulder injury) and Phil Puncher (promoted to the firsts).

But they maintained second place in East Five south-east with a win in which Ian Crumpton scored a hat-trick on his debut for this side.

Aaron Pitts netted twice and other scorers were skipper Keith Arnold and Kiwi international Andrew Johnson.

The men’s seconds, who enjoyed last week’s triumph at Rayleigh’s Sweyne Park School, go to Saffron Walden thirds on Saturday.

Otherwise it was a losing day for the other men’s teams with the thirds going down 4-1 at Romford second and the fourths being beaten 5-1 at home by Old de Ferrians 2nd.

The ladies’ first team who play in East One south, had goals from B Prosser and M Lamb to thank for their 2-1 win at Brentwood and are fifth in the table.

The second team, beaten 2-0 at Harlow, are fourth in the Essex Premier.

The firsts host Tunbridge Wells at Sweyne Park on Saturday (11.15am) with the second team taking on Wapping third team at Thomas More (12.45pm).

The ladies’ thirds lost 2-0 at Phoenix second and the thirds went down 1-0 at home to Colne.

The club’s fifth string — although still bottom of Essex Three — had a scoring effort from H Davies to thank for their 1-1 draw at home to Thurrock 3rd.

The mixed line-up return to action on Sunday when they travel to Colchester Garrison.
