No doom for Temple, but Jones’ story ends

SOUTH-EAST Essex stars of tomorrow, Joseph Temple and Tyler Jones endured mixed fortunes on their big night.

Wickford’s Temple boxed his way to victory at the Royal Navy Schools Amateur Boxing Association of England Championships which took place in Brentwood.

Meanwhile, Basildon youngster Tyler Jones narrowly missed out in his bout, taking a silver medal.

Temple, aged 12, from Newham ABC saw off stiff competition in the 34 kg final of the competition from Liam Homan, representing Stockbridge ABC.

He said: “I have been working hard in the gym for this day and I owe it all to my dad and my trainers Jimmy and Tommy .”

Jones, aged 13 from Berry Boys ABC, lost out in the 60kg final of the competition to Patrick McCann, representing Kettering SOB ABC. Berry coach Mark Quirey admitted that the club couldn’t be prouder of their fighter despite his points defeat.

Said Quirey: “Tyler was only having his fifth bout whereas his opponents had won 16 of his 17 contests and had won a European Cup bronze. To be honest we were afraid that his opponent could have overwhelmed Tyler and his corner were ready from the start to throw in the white towel if that happened.

“But Tyler boxed superbly and although beaten on points, did the club proud.”

The year 2010 marks the fourth year of a successful partnership between the Royal Navy and the Amateur Boxing Association of England (ABAE).

It forms an important part of the Royal Navy’s drive to increase awareness of the careers available in the naval service, and also secures navy involvement at ABAE training camps and the option for the Royal Marines Sports Presentation Team to visit over 700 ABAE affiliated clubs across England.

Captain of naval recruiting, Captain Mike Davis-Marks said: “Over the past three years, our partnership with the ABA has proved a real success.

“The levels of tenacity and spirit, such as those shown this weekend, are of such value both in and out of the ring.

“By joining forces with the ABA, we are really able to help showcase the future talent of Britain.”
