ESSEX County Bowling Club has voted to allow women to play on its outdoor rinks for the first time in its 106-year history.
The Chalkwell club, which already allowed women to bowl on its six indoor rinks, has now given the go-ahead for them to compete on its 12 outdoor rinks during competitions over the summer months.
A statement released by the Imperial Avenue club says: “A significant milestone and policy change has recently taken place following the acceptance by an overwhelming majority of members to empower ladies to form an outdoor section.
“This will now enable the club to offer all-year bowling to male and female members for the first time in its 106-year history.”
The club boasts a membership of more than 750, and they play in friendly internal, district, area and county matches.
It has a cadet section and has senior members who represent the club and county throughout the year.
For more information on membership call the club’s secretary on 01702 338261.
Essex County’s move follows the unification last March of the Southend Parks Bowls Circle with the district’s six female clubs.
