ESSEX Spartans slumped to their second defeat of their season, and their first home defeat since 2010, when they lost 28-0 to Sussex Thunder.

The Billericay-based Spartans knew they faced a stern test against one of the favourites to win the division, and quickly found themselves trailing when Thunder capitalised on an Essex mistake to recover a fumble in the endzone for a 6-0 lead.

The Spartans attack, led by quarterback James Dawson, struggled against a tough Sussex defence, and the team ended the first quarter down 12-0 after the Sussex quarterback ran in for another score.

Spartan Kieron Treacy was a constant thorn in the Thunder’s side as defences came out on top in the second quarter.

The Spartans were unlucky to see an Aaron Davidson punt blocked, gifting the Thunder good field position, which they soon converted into another touchdown to extend their advantage.

The teams then traded interceptions, Ally Minto with the pick for Essex, as the half ended with the visitors leading 19-0.

Sussex scored their final touchdown of the game in the third quarter to pull further ahead 25-0.

With the Spartans still unable to make any progress against a solid Thunder defense, the visitors were able to score a field goal to end the quarter leading 28-0.

Treacy registered his first interception as a Spartan in the games final quarter, but there would be no further scoring and the visitors went home with the victory.

And Spartans assistant head coach Sean Benton was full of praise for Thunder’s display “We faced a tough opponent who must be considered a strong favourite for the national championship,” said Benton.

“While the result was disappointing we know what we need to do to improve and look forward to getting back on track next Saturday against Hampshire.”

Spartans’ next home game is on Sunday June 10 against the East Kent Mavericks.
