THE Redbacks baseball club have officially opened their new diamond at Forest Glade Football Club in Billericay.

But Feltwell Red Redbacks pooped the party by securing victory in the first game.

The visitors raced into an early 8-2 lead before the FG Ponies hit back — only to lose in heartbreaking circumstances by a single run in the first game.

Game two was another close affair, with much tighter fielding all round.

But Jamie Gregory hit a big home run for the FG Ponies and fantastic running by Ollie Johns gave the hosts a lead that Conner Brown closed out for.

After that, James Scammell led the FG Broncos’ hitting and pitching in their first game against a hard-wired Bracknell side.

But the visitors were able to put more good hits in play as they beat the hosts over the course of the afternoon.

Bobby Burnett and Max Asher also impressed for the under-14 FG Broncos, Burnett giving up only two runs in three innings in game two of his pitching debut.

The following day, Dave Bennett put in the performance of his career for the Redbacks’ third team against the Herts Eagles, in Billericay.

Bennett had two doubles, two singles and a home run to go with pitching all nine innings.

But the experienced Eagles just had enough to edge a really thrilling game.

This Sunday, the Redbacks third side will strive for their first ever win against the Richmond Dukes in south west London, while the Redbacks’ top senior team host the Richmond Knights at Melbourne Park in Chelmsford, with games starting at 12 noon.

Junior training takes place on Wednesday at Forest Glade Football Club, Billericay, from 5-7pm for all children aged under 16, while senior training is on Thursday from 6-8pm at Melbourne Park, Chelmsford, open to anyone over 16.
