JESSICA Judd can’t see any reason why she can’t secure the qualifying time for the World Championships.

The 20-year-old from Canvey won a bronze medal at the British Championships last weekend in the 1,500m.

The result means that if Judd can run the qualifying time for the championships in Beijing, she is likely to be given the third and final spot 1,500m spot on the Great Britain squad.

“I’m so happy,” she said. “Top three was my aim so I’m over the moon.”

Judd has decided to concentrate on the 1,500m this year after a number of successful years concentrating on the 800m which culminated in her reaching both the Commonwealth Games and European Championships finals last summer.

But she says she has always enjoyed the 1,500m more and decided to focus her efforts on the three and three-quarter laps this season.

Great Britain has a strong crop of 1,500m runners at the moment including Laura Muir and Laura Weightman who finished first and second in Birmingham.

But Judd is confident she can be the third element of a strong trio to represent Britain at the World Championships.

To do that, she needs to run a personal best of 4m 6.50s to get the qualifying time. “I can’t see any reason why I can’t do that,” Judd said. “I’ve run 4m 9.5s this season so I’m confident I can knock those three seconds off.”

Judd finished the British Championships final in 4m 16.08s. The race had been tactical until, with 800m to go, the British number one Muir attacked.

“My coach wanted me to sit in the group so I did that but when Laura (Muir) went I couldn’t really get out so then I knew it was a race for second and third,” Judd revealed “I was closing on second so I was happy with that – I’ve still got a long way to go in training so I’m over the moon.”
