SEVERAL south Essex athletes made the long trip to Scotland to tackle the Edinburgh marathon with some impressive results.

Matibini Matibini and John Hannan represented Leigh Striders and both put in impressive times finishing in 2:48:58 and 2:59:02 respectively.

Benfleet Running Club's husband and wife team Marie Smith and Dave Smith completed the marathon in 4:09:09 and 5:15:50 respectively, with the former’s a 15 minute personal best over the same distance.

Castle Point Jogger Nigel Thorne completed his 10th marathon in 4:09.

That was not the only marathon run over the weekend, with the Kent Roadrunners Marathon also luring several local runners.

Benfleet Running Club's Paul Reed completed the course in 4:47:58 and Castle Point Jogger Martin England completed the 26.2 miles around Kent Cyclopark in a hugely impressive 3:36.

"I had a great day wearing my CPJ T-Shirt with pride,” said England. “It is the biggest medal in the UK and I am still dizzy from the 21 lap course but I've already booked for next year!"

Elsewhere, lone Benfleet Running Club member Daniel Carter set a fantastic pace to complete the Rock 'n Roll Liverpool Marathon in 03:37:47.
