MORE than 300 runners from 12 different clubs battled through testing conditions to complete a gruelling 8.5km course at Langdon Hills Country Park.

The event was hosted, in the freezing conditions, by Pitsea Running Club in the latest round of the South Essex Cross Country League.

But despite the difficulties, Pitsea’s publicity officer Nicolas Miller, insisted a great time had been had by all.

“We got a lot of good feedback from the runners and people seemed to enjoy being tested like they were,” said Miller.

“The energy sapping course is an undulating mix of grass and track and run over two laps.

“There were great performances from runners, marshals and bakers and everyone really seemed to enjoy the warm drink and homemade cakes we handed out at the end.

“I think it’s safe to say Pitsea Running Club again delivered on our big cross country race day.

First across the line was Rob Warner, of Havering 90, who finished the course in a time of 28 minutes 42 seconds and the first woman home was Billericay Striders’ Emma Prideaux, who was also impressive in finishing in 32.51 minutes.

>Pitsea Running Club encourages new members to get involved and start running.

The club is made up of those taking their first strides at club level to seasoned athletes.

And it also encourages a strong social aspect to running life with various functions organised throughout the year, including the main club night on Fridays, which includes a running or walking group.
