HAYLEY McLean’s superb winter season continued when she returned from the Essex & Eastern Indoor Championships with four gold medals – and none of them were in her strongest discipline.

The Great Britain 400m hurdle international picked up victories in the under-20 women’s 200m, 400m, 60m and 60m hurdles at Lee Valley.

And the 17-year-old said it’s all good preparation for the summer season when she hopes to gain more international honours over the 400m hurdles.

“I was really pleased,” said McLean, who is from Stanford-le-Hope and attends Palmer’s College. “Everything is going really well at the moment “I got personal bests in the 60m flat (7.97s) and the 60m hurdles (8.74s) which is pleasing as I’ve been working on my speed.

“I’ve been trying a few different things to increase my speed between the hurdles over 400m and this shows it’s paying off.”

McLean, who ran 25.87s in the 200m and 57.45s in the 400m, now turns her attention to the national indoor championships where she has decided to focus solely on the 60m hurdles.

“I don’t really enjoy running 400m indoors and I had a chat with my coach and we decided to stick to the 60m hurdles,” said McLean, who will face, among others, her international team-mate Yasmin Miller in those finals.

Miller came fifth in the senior national indoor championships last weekend. “It’s going to be interesting,” said McLean.
