Southchurch’s mixed start

SOUTHCHURCH Park men's bowling club got their season off to a mixed start, drawing a friendly but, more importantly, winning their first Parren Shield game.

The friendly defeat came away to a Rochford side who won on two rinks and drew the other to win by seven shots.

But in the Parren Shield game at Chalkwell, Southchurch were victorious on two rinks and lost the other to win by a single-shot margin.

There was no Beharrel Shield match as Chalkwell pulled out of the competition due to lack of number of players required to run a team throughout the season.

RESULTS Rochford v Southchurch Park (SPBC first): Derek Pratt 18 P Cottrell 18, Chris Petty-Mayor 16 Gordon Mansfield 18, Dennis Newbery 11 Mike Harding 16. Southchurch 45, Rochford 52.

Chalkwell v Southchurch Park (SPBC first): Michael Nunn 24 D Goodyear 14, Gerry Treadway 20 J Watkins 17, Dave Box 8 Russell Langstone 20. SPBC 52 (8 points) CBC 51 (2 points).
