ALEX Brown has helped Exeter Chiefs win their first major piece of silverware.

The powerful prop forward played the last 14 minutes to help Exeter beat Northampton Saints 15-8 in the final of the LV=Cup at their Sandy Park base on Sunday.

And former FitzWimarc School pupil Brown was thrilled to help his side come out on top.

“It was just awesome to be a part of and to help Exeter win their first trophy of the Premiership era was fantastic,” said the 24-year-old player.

“I don’t think we were lucky to win because every single one of the team played out of their skin.

“But it was still a bit nervy towards the end. Funnily enough coming on and being on the pitch wasn’t quite as nail-biting as watching because you’re engrossed in the game.

“You can impact what’s happening and I think it’s definitely one of the biggest and most memorable matches I’ve ever been involved in.”

Rob Baxter’s side toasted Anglo-Welsh glory on home soil as tries from Chris Whitehead and Dean Mumm, coupled with five points from the boot of young fly-half Henry Slade sealed a memorable win.

Having suffered cup final heartache on numerous occasions in the past, there was no denying the Chiefs this time round as they eased past their Premiership counterparts.

And the success continued what has been a fine season for Brown.

“I’ve been playing a lot more this year and things seem to be clicking into place for me,” said Brown.

“Everything is going well at the moment – but I’m not getting carried away and will continue to work hard to help the team pick up more wins.”

Rochford-born Brown, who has represented England at under-16 and 18 age groups, will have the support of his family as he strives to make that happen.

They continually make the 500-mile round trip from Rayleigh to Exeter to see him in action and that commitment is hugely appreciated by Brown.

“The support my family give me is a huge inspiration,” stressed Brown. “They regularly make the long drive to come and see me play – and it’s fantastic.”
