ROB Smith has proved to be a huge hit down under after swapping Westcliff for Australia.

The 25-year-old centre has just finished his first season playing for the Hamilton Hawks.

And he caught the eye enough to be selected in the league’s team of the year while also being chosen as the import of the season.

“It’s been a really good season for both the team and me,” said Smith.

“The team finished second with a pretty new squad which is great and they’re hoping to build on that next season.

“I was personally pleased with my season too and being import of the year and being selected in team of the year is something I’m obviously proud of.”

Smith’s move came around after he was invited to play in Australia by his former Westcliff team-mate Paul Dan, who now also lines up for the Hawks.

And Smith believes the level of the game is similar to National Three London & SE where Westcliff now play.

“The level is probably about the same to what Westcliff are playing at the moment but the game is much more expansive here,” said Smith.

“We don’t play too many games in the wet or cold unlike the January/February months back home and I’ve been enjoying it.”

As a result, Smith hopes to stay in Australia for another year and is planning to play touch rugby and sevens during the off-season.

He also feels playing abroad has made him an even better player.

“It has improved my attacking skills considerably,” said Smith.

“Teams aren’t afraid to run the ball out from their own line and possession is key.

“They rarely kick the ball away or maul the ball in the forwards.

“They encourage us to use the width of the pitch so it requires you to be pretty fit so I think that’s helped me improve as well.”

Without Smith, Westcliff have made a stuttering start to the new season, losing their first five games.

But the centre is backing them to turn things around.

“The Westcliff boys have a tough season ahead but I think they have the right players and club culture to take on the challenge,” he added.
