FIT-AGAIN winger Danny Cleare is confident of Southend Saxons getting their National Two South season back on track when they host Lydney at Warners Bridge tomorrow.

Saxons have been beaten in five of their first six games of the new campaign.

But Cleare, who has now recovered from a knee ligament injury, is certain Southend can return to winning ways this weekend.

“We have a decent team with a good set of lads and I’m sure things will start going our way again soon,” said the 27-year-old.

“We’ve lost a couple of close games and we’re maybe not executing our attacks as well as we could be.

“However, we’re back at home this weekend and I’m confident we can get the win we need.”

Cleare is also keen to make that happen having only just returned to action.

The winger was forced to miss the first five games of the campaign after injuring his knee in Southend’s final pre-season friendly against Rosslyn Park.

But Cleare returned in last weekend’s 42-21 defeat against Chinnor and is now ready to step things up against Lydney.

“I’m buzzing to be playing again and I can’t wait to get out there at the weekend,” said Cleare.

“I knew the injury was going to take a while to get over because I heard my knee go pop when I went to make a tackle.

“It seemed to take forever to get better and it’s not nice watching the lads go through their warm ups before games because you want to be out there.

“But I’m back now which is great and my knee felt fine at the weekend, it was just my lungs I was worried about!”

Southend’s indifferent start to the season has seen them slip to 14th in the 16 team table, below Lyndey who are currently eighth.

The Gloucestershire have won three of their six games so far but have yet to win away from home this term.

And Cleare is keen for that to continue.

“Lydney are traditionally stronger at home than they are away but they’re a physical, honest bunch who will be hard to play against,” said the winger.

“But if we play like we can we can definitely get the win.”
