I THINK it was a good scalp for us at Southend Saxons to beat Worthing and make it back-to-back wins at the weekend.

Worthing were in a league above us last season and, even though they have lost a few players since then, I thought we did really well to come out on top.

It was certainly pleasing to see and we could have made the score-line even more flattering.

We wasted two or three good chances to score tries, but thankfully that didn’t cost us this time around.

We also made sure we kept on playing the same way and that was vitally important. We got ourselves into the lead for a reason and you have to carry on playing that way.

You shouldn’t suddenly change because of the score-board and I think the players have learnt that now.

We did the basics well too and confidence has also risen now which obviously makes a difference.

When you can win a close game it gives everyone a boost.

But we’re certainly not getting carried away by these results and we know we will have to work even harder to keep this run going, starting with a tough game at Launceston at the weekend.

HARRY HUDSON REAPING THE REWARDS

WE’VE got a very strong five together now at Southend and Harry Hudson is reaping the rewards of that with his tries.

He got another one at the weekend to take his season’s tally to five and he’s one of the young players here who I’m really enjoying working with now.

He’s very mature for his age, he has a good understanding of the game and he’s playing well too.

Hopefully I can pass on some of my experience to some of the younger lads in the team because there’s a great bunch here and we certainly have the spirit you need to get success.

NO ENGLAND SURPRISES

I DON’T think there were too many surprises in the England squad named by Stuart Lancaster.

There are few injuries at the moment which obviously limited his options and I think that probably led to the selections being what most people expected.

There were a few youngsters picked which I like to see because they are the future of the game and it’s important that they are given a chance to impress for their country.

But, if I’m being entirely honest and put my hand on my heart, I think it’s going to be an extremely tough Autumn for England.

We should have enough about us to beat Samoa but the way Australia, New Zealand and South Africa are playing at the moment makes them very difficult opponents indeed.
