SOUTHEND Saxons’ centre Chris Vaughan hailed his side’s attitude and commitment as they secured their first away win of the National Two South season at Launceston on Saturday.

Vaughan was among the try scorers as Southend triumphed 22-21 in Cornwall.

And the former King John School pupil was thrilled Saxons record their third win in succession.

“It was great to get a win at Launceston because it’s always a hard place to win,” said Vaughan.

“Everyone's attitude and commitment to hold onto the lead was great.

“We’ve won three in a row now which has given us loads of confidence and we are certain we are going to make it four when we play Cambridge on Saturday.”

But Southend’s winning run has come after they had previously been beaten in five of their first six games of the season.

And Vaughan has revealed that led to a slight change in tactics which appears to have paid dividends.

“We simplified our game plan and our discipline has been much better too,” said Vaughan.

“We are just not making as many mistakes and it's just all starting to click. I'm confident we can beat anyone if we keep playing how we are now.”

Southend’s win also made it five defeats in a row for Launceston but both sides got off the mark with penalties at the weekend.

Kieron Lewitt’s effort for the home-side was soon cancelled out by Saxons’ fly-half Tom Ashton before Harry Hudson continued his new found try scoring form with yet another effort.

Hudson has now scored five tries in his last four games and is now the joint fourth highest try scorer in the league.

Ashton converted his latest try before Launceston replied with another penalty from Lewitt to cut Southend’s lead to 10-6 at half-time.

However, immediately after the restart, Saxons increased their advantage when replacement scrum half Harry Branch went through to score his first try of the season.

Launceston replied with a try of their own from Harry Davies which was converted by Lewitt.

Vaughan then took centre stage with his try but the home-side refused to give in and soon replied with a try from Matt Shepherd which meant Southend were just four points in front.

Another penalty from Lewitt cut that down to just one but Saxons were able to see out the final few minutes to come out on top.

Southend will now be looking to do the same when they welcome Cambridge to Warners Bridge this Sunday.
