SOUTHEND Saxons scrum half Harry Branch is desperate to help his side make it four wins in a row when they take on Cambridge at Warners Bridge on Sunday.

Southend have recovered from a shaky start to the season to triumph in their last three games.

And Branch, who scored his first try of the campaign in last weekend’s narrow 22-21 win at Launceston, is keen to come out on top again this weekend.

“The energy in the squad is fantastic now after the results we’ve had so hopefully we can keep up the winning run,” said the former King John School pupil.

“Cambridge haven't been having the best of results recently so this Sunday we would like the capitalise on this and get the win to make it four in a row.”

Southend head in to the game sitting 10th in the National Two South standings and will also be full of confidence too after seeing off Launceston.

The narrow margin of the victory also delighted Branch and so too did his first try of the season.

“To win a close game like that away from home in Cornwall was such a great buzz for the squad,” said Branch.

“We worked well as a unit and got the win we deserved to make it three wins in a row.

“I think were executing our game plan well now and everyone knows their jobs within the side.

“This is making us more profitable when attacking and getting a try at the weekend felt great for me too especially in a tight game like that.”

But, despite his try, Branch will again be facing a fight to be included in the matchday squad this weekend.

For his fellow scrum-halves Rhys Powell and Lester Pollard are also battling for selection.

And Branch feels the strong competition for places is bringing the best out of them all.

“The competition at scrum half this year is very strong but it’s good,” said Branch.

“It's always nice to see that all the hard work in training is paying off and hopefully that can keep on happening.”

His next opportunity to impress comes against Cambridge on Sunday and Branch is particularly pleased the match has been put back 24 hours.

“I think it’s really good and it also means I'll be able to go watch the England game at Twickenham," he laughed.

Southend welcome back Branch’s fellow scrum half Rhys Powell this weekend while second row Chris Shields and full-backs Iain Meads are also available.

Ticket prices have been set at £10 adults and £5 for anyone who is a member of another local rugby club, providing they bring proof.

Children aged under 16 can also watch for free.

The match kicks off at 1.30pm and will be followed by a second team clash, also between Southend and Cambridge.
