MICHAEL Guess has returned to Southend Saxons after deciding to again come out of retirement.

The experienced prop forward hung up his boots for a second time at the end of last season.

But he has now returned to Warners Bridge ahead of tomorrow’s home game with Chinnor to earn himself a new nickname from the club’s director of rugby Chris Green.

“He’s going to be known as Sinatra now due to the number of comebacks he’s had but it’s great to have Guessy back with us again,” said Green.

“He’s a very, very good player but we already have one at tight-head prop, in Aston Bevans-Royston, so there’s no guarantees what might happen.

“I honestly wouldn’t swap those two tight-heads for any others in our league and it’s a huge plus for us now.

“Guessy is also a really big character and that’s going to stand us in good stead too.”

Guess, who has made a few appearances in London Two North East with South Woodham this season, will go straight in to the squad for this weekend’s clash with Chinnor.

Saxons were without a fixture last weekend as their scheduled game at Dorking was postponed because of a waterlogged pitch.

But Green is still keen to carry on from where his side left off in their last game, an 18-17 win against table-topping Henley.

“We want to carry on the momentum we got from beating Henley and it was frustrating we couldn’t do that against Dorking,” said Green.

“I’m still quite dubious there was anything wrong with the pitch but there’s nothing we can do about it. We just have to focus on what’s going to be another difficult game tomorrow against Chinnor.”

The Oxfordshire side are currently fifth in the National Two South standings and have triumphed five times in their last six outings.

They also beat Southend 42-21 at home in October.

But Green believes Saxons, who slipped to 13th after not playing last weekend, are capable of coming out on top.

“It’s going to be a real test but we showed what we’re capable of during the win against Henley,” said Green.

“That’s set a standard for us now and if we can match that again and then we have every chance of getting another good result.”

Southend have scrum half Rhys Powell available again after he missed the last two games with a hip adductor injury.

Full-back Iain Meads is also set to return after recovering from a hamstring problem while winger Danny Cleare, who has not played since mid-December, faces a late fitness test on a knee injury.
