SAM Fombo is out to secure a fourth successive victory for Southend Saxons when they face Lydney in a crunch National Two South clash tomorrow.

Saxons have triumphed in their last three games to move out of the relegation zone and up to 13th in the standings.

But Lydney remain immediately below them in the table and Fombo is therefore desperate to come out on top.

“It’s an important game and it will be a tough one too but I can’t see any reason why we shouldn’t come out with a win,” said the Basildon based 22-year-old.

“We’ve won our last three games and there’s more of a positive vibe at the club.

“There are more bodies at training which helps when we do team runs and I think the Henley win really gave us a boost of confidence.”

Sandwiched in between the win against the league leaders were victories against Dings Crusaders and Chinnor, who Southend beat 18-14 at Warners Bridge last weekend.

And Fombo was delighted to have again come out on top.

“I thought it was an alright game and it was great to get the win,” said the blindside flanker.

“Our first half performance was better than our second half performance, but our defence was pretty solid as well and that win has also opened the gap a bit from the relegation zone.”

Southend are now one place seven points clear of tomorrow’s opponents, Lydney, who currently occupy the final position in the relegation zone.

But Fombo is keen to help expand that gap even further and wants to build on scoring in first try of the season in last weekend’s win against Chinnor.

“It felt good to get the try and my aim is double figures for the season now,” said Fombo.

“Hopefully that's the start of achieving that and we can pick up more wins, starting with Saturday.”

Southend have Mark Billings, who has played at full-back and on the wing this season, available again after he recovered from the hand injury which forced him to miss last weekend’s win against Chinnor.

He could well replace Iain Meads who is unavailable and there are also fitness doubts surrounding Saxons’ number eight Daniel Legge.
