CHRIS Vaughan is backing Southend Saxons to bounce back from their disappointing defeat at relegation rivals Lydney.

Saxons’ three match winning run was ended by a 25-20 reverse in Gloucestershire.

But Vaughan, who was among the try scorers for Southend, is certain Chris Green’s team will soon get back to winning ways, starting with this Saturday’s clash at fifth placed Worthing.

“It's always going to be a tough game against Worthing but we seem to be playing our best rugby against the better sides so I hope it's going to be the same this week,” said Vaughan.

“We are all looking forward to it as well.”

Following Saturday’s defeat to a Lydney team just below them in the National Two South standings, Southend are now just four points above the relegation zone.

But Vaughan, a former King John School pupil, is convinced Southend will be able to stay out of the danger zone.

“I'm really confident we will stay up and we had done well before the weekend, winning three games in a row,” said the centre.

“We have a tough run of games coming up now with three out of the next four being away.

“But there is still a positive attitude throughout the side and I'm sure we will go on another winning run.”

However, for that to happen, Southend must impress for the whole 80 minutes and not just in stages like they did against Lydney last weekend.

“We were just too inconsistent throughout the game,” said Vaughan.

“We played some very good rugby at times but most of the time was just not good enough which was obviously disappointing from our point of view.”

Southend’s club officials were also disappointed by Lydney’s conduct on and off the field while a Saxons player could be cited for a clash with the home-side’s flanker Matt Boobyer.

But Vaughan did not feel it was a dirty game.

“Apart from a few incidents I thought it was quite a clean match,” he added.
