DANNY Cleare wants to turn his and Southend Saxons’ season around with a shock win at Dorking this weekend.

The 28-year-old winger has endured an injury ravaged campaign while Saxons sit just above the relegation zone.

And Cleare is therefore fired up to secure a more successful end to the season.

“So far this season has been one of my worst if I’m honest,” said the Rochford based Cleare, who has yet to score a try for Southend this term.

“I’ve have a few injuries and it’s been hard for me to get the sharpness you need because I haven’t had a run of games.

“I haven’t scored a try yet in the league but I scored one in the cup which was still a first team fixture so I’m claiming that as my first of the season and hopefully I can get another one at the weekend because it’s a big game.”

Southend suffered a dramatic late defeat at Cambridge last weekend and are now 13th in the National Two South standings.

Saxons are just one place and three points above the relegation zone.

But Cleare is confident of avoiding the drop.

“The pressure is on but with the players we have here we all still think we can stay up,” said the winger.

“We’ve won a few games but we need to start picking up more bonus points and we’re fully aware of that.

“We’ve also watched the recording of the Cambridge and we were terrible for the first 20 minutes.

“It was mistake after mistake but after that we were fairly dominant and we should’ve won it in the end.

“Hopefully we can learn from that this weekend and make sure we get a better result.”

However, Southend will be in for a real test tomorrow as Dorking are currently second in the standings with just three defeats in 23 outings.

But Cleare believes Saxons are capable of coming out on top.

“Dorking are a good team and are having a really good season but their last few results haven’t been quite so good,” said Cleare.

“Hopefully we can take advantage of that and get a good result to move up the table.”

Southend welcome new signing, scrum half Ed Hoadley in to the squad for the first time this weekend while Mark Billings, who has played on the wing and at full-back this season is also in contention after recovering from concussion.
