WESTCLIFF’S Billy Morrant will be striving to build on his promising debut when Tonbridge Juddian visit the Gables in National Three London & SE tomorrow.

The powerful 18-year-old hooker came off the bench to score a try in last Saturday’s disappointing 33-22 defeat at fellow strugglers Guernsey.

And the youngster is now desperate to help Westcliff secure an improved score-line in their bid to beat the drop.

“It's going to be a tough game like every game is in this league but if we start the game well and finish as well as we often do then I think we have a good chance,” said Morrant, who has been with Westcliff since the age of four.

“We are still confident about staying up but we need to work on the problems that we've had which I think are easy to identify and correct.”

Westcliff will need to put things right quickly too as they currently sit 11th in the table, just one point and one place above the relegation zone with only five games to go.

However, Morrant’s determined debut offered some encouragement last weekend.

And he was pleased to start his first team career with a try.

“I was so pleased to score but I have to give credit to my team for doing most of the hard work and getting me close to the line,” said Morrant, who played the whole of the second half in Guernsey.

“But looking at the rest of the game it's obviously irritating not to win the game especially as it puts more pressure on us for the remainder of the season.”

Morrant hopes to play a part in those matches, starting with tomorrow’s encounter against a Tonbridge side who are eighth in the table and have lost four of their last five games.
