SEEVIC College are heading to Twickenham after a stunning 45-23 win against Stockport Grammar School in the semi-finals of the under 18 vase competition.

Seevic trailed 16-6 at the break before brilliantly fighting back to win at Saracens’ Allianz Park base.

And coach Danny Cleare, who also plays for the Southend Saxons’ first team, labelled the victory as his best ever moment in rugby.

“I’m just massively proud of the players and what they have achieved,” said Cleare.

“Taking the team to Twickenham will be the pinnacle of my rugby career but it’s no less than they deserve after how hard they’ve worked.

“The spirit and togetherness they have is also incredible and I think that played a huge part in them winning at the weekend.”

Seevic have won nine games in the competition to reach the final against Churcher’s College which will be played on Wednesday March 25 at the home of English rugby.

That has been achieved due an intense training regime which has seen them on the pitch three times a week and in the gym on both Mondays and Fridays after college hours.

Those efforts have now been fully rewarded and Cleare was always confident winning at the weekend, despite the half-time deficit.

“I always felt as though we turn things around,” said the 28-year-old. “We didn’t play very well in the first half and we were only 10 points down so I knew we could overturn that if we played the way I knew we could.

“There were a couple of things we spoke about to put things right and thankfully we were able to carry them out and get the win.”

Cleare is now already relishing his side appearing in the final and believes they have worked wonders to reach that stage of the competition.

“It is really rare for a further education college to get this far so it’s a huge achievement,” said Cleare.

“Plenty of the teams we’ve played against have also been together for a number of years.

“But we have some very talented players and now we want to go and win the final as well.”
