SEEVIC’S director of rugby Danny Cleare insists his side have their sights on success and not enjoyment when they take on Churcher’s College at Twickenham tomorrow.

The Thundersley based youngsters have surged through to the final of the NatWest under 18s Vase final after stringing together a series of fine performance.

But Cleare is demanding one more good display in a game he describes as the pinnacle of his own rugby career.

“It’s a fantastic achievement to have got this far but we’re going there to win the tournament not to just enjoy playing at Twickenham and having a nice day out,” said Cleare, who also plays for Southend Saxons’ first team.

“I’ve never had the privilege of playing at Twickenham myself but the next biggest thing is to take a team there so this will be the pinnacle of my own career.

“And it will be a dream come true to win it.”

Seevic have certainly become accustomed to coming out on top in their matches having been beaten just once since October.

But it was a completely different story at the start of the season when they initially struggled to find their form, winning just one of their first five games.

“Being a sixth form college we get a new batch of boys every year so we start from scratch each season and it does take a little while to get going,” said Cleare.

“We lost three of our first five games, we drew another and just beat Westcliff 5-3 but since October we’ve actually only lost once and it’s been going really well.”

That has largely been down to a tough training regime which has seen the side regularly put through their paces both on the pitch and in the gym.

But Cleare also feels the team spirit which has been formed has played a crucial part in the success.

“The boys study together, eat together, train together and socialise together too so when times are tough during the games they can pull together,” said the 28-year-old, who is a former Seevic student himself.

“I think that certainly helped in semi-final against Stockport because we were 16-6 at half-time before fighting back in the second half.”

Seevic eventually triumphed 45-23 to see off Stockport at Saracens’ Allianz Park home and set up this Wednesday’s trip to Twickenham.

But Seevic will sample their first taste of the world famous stadium today Cleare hopes that will help settle his side.

“We’re going there on the Tuesday to acclimatise to the ground and get used to the surroundings which will certainly help,” said Cleare.

“Of course you’re going to be in awe of the place but we want it to be just another game and we want it to be one we win as well.”
