CHRIS Shields wants to cap an already memorable season by helping Seevic to triumph at Twickenham.

The Rayleigh based 18-year-old made his Southend Saxons debut in National Two South earlier on this term.

And he now wants to follow that up with a win at the home of English rugby.

“I enjoy playing for both Southend and Seevic and I’m very honoured and proud to have played in the National Leagues this season,” said Shields.

“Playing men’s rugby is more or less a completely different game to the under 18s but I obviously enjoy both.

“And Wednesday’s game is going to be the biggest of my life so far.”

Shields, who plays at number eight, is therefore eager to make the most of the opportunity.

But he also knows Seevic cannot afford to lose their focus against Churcher’s College.

“Walking out of the tunnel will be amazing, especially when you consider the kind of foot-steps we’re following in by doing that but once the game starts it’s just about getting the job done,” said Shields.

“We will be treating it as just another game and making sure we win it so we need to keep our focus.”

Shields is confident of that happening and he is still also quite relieved to have made the final after he was yellow carded at a crucial time of the semi-final against Stockport.

“I thought I had let the team down and thought Stockport might get a few points but thankfully the lads played brilliantly,” said Shields, a former FitzWimarc School pupil.

“I apologised to everyone and thankfully we were still able to win.

“I was always confident we would get the result too and the quarter-final was actually a lot together because that was very intense.

“But thankfully we got through it and now it’s all about getting the right result on Wednesday.”
