SOUTHEND Saxons’ prop forward Aston Bevans-Royston wants to end a memorable week with a shock win at Taunton in National Two South tomorrow.

Southend desperately need to pick up the points in their bid to beat the drop.

And Bevans-Royston will be heading into the game in good spirits having completed a unique player of the year award achievement.

“I was very honoured to have won both the players player and the player of the year awards and I was told it was the first time in the club’s history the same players have both awards,” said Bevans-Royston.

“To even be in the mix with some of the boys here, with how well they have been playing individually throughout the season is a great achievement for me.

“I couldn't have really imagined that my first full season could have gone quite like it has but we've just got to finish the job now and make sure we stay up.”

Southend are currently just one place and six points above the relegation zone, with three games to go.

But Bevans-Royston is still confident of securing an unexpected victory this weekend against a Taunton team who sit third in the standings.

“Taunton are a very good side who are pushing for a promotion but we dominated them at home in the reverse fixture earlier on in the season and will look to do the same tomorrow,” said the prop forward.

“If we turn up and play the way we can I have no doubt we could cause an upset down there.

“We have beaten all the top teams this season and we will take great confidence from that leading into Saturday. “ Southend saw off Taunton 18-8 at Warners Bridge back in December.

But they have struggled to perform to that level on a consistent basis and therefore find themselves in a survival fight Bevans-Royston is clearly not enjoying.

“It's not nice looking over your shoulder at other teams’ results every week and we're not helping ourselves out at times either,” said Bevans-Royston.

“But we do have the strength to pull through and put this tough season behind us.

“All the boys are very positive and we've had a great couple of training sessions building towards Taunton so it builds for a good game.”

However, Taunton will be tough to see off after winning seven of their last nine matches.
