SOUTHEND Saxons’ director of rugby Chris Green believes his side will need to win one of their two remaining matches to avoid relegation from National Two South.

Saxons are currently one place and seven points above the drop zone with just two games to go.

But Green still feels Southend need another victory and he hopes it can come with a shock success against second placed Bishop’s Stortford at Warners Bridge tomorrow.

“I think Lydney, who are just below us in the table will win both of the games they have left so we need to win one of ours and hopefully that can be tomorrow,” said Green.

“We’re playing the form team in the league in Bishop’s Stortford but every team in the top four has been beaten down here this season and we want to keep that run going.”

Southend will be roared on by their largest home crowd of the season and will be desperate to end a run of three successive defeats.

Their latest setback was a 52-18 reverse at Taunton last weekend.

And Green is demanding an immediate improvement.

“We’re hurting from the weekend but we’re looking forward to Saturday and we want to take another scalp,” said Green.

“We’ve certainly played better against the top teams at home than those at the bottom so let’s hope it’s the same on Saturday.

“We are at our strongest when our backs are against the wall and they certainly will be on Saturday.

“But we will have a big crowd here and we will be giving it a right go.”

However, Southend could be missing back row Daniel Legge, prop forward Michael Guess, hooker Marcus Bloomberg, second row Adam Ferrier and winger Mark Billings.

Second placed Bishop’s Stortford are also unbeaten in their last eight games and have not been beaten since January.
