WESTCLIFF Rugby Club’s under 10s reached the final of the Alan Day VW Champions event played at Saracens’ Allianz Park home.

The youngsters were one of eight teams to qualify for the tournament.

And Westcliff coach Peter Mahoney was full of praise for his youngsters who played their last game at half-time of Saracens’ clash with Leicester, meaning more than 10,000 fans were watching.

“It was just a great day and the kids and parents enjoyed every moment of it, “said Mahoney.

“We had some very kind words from Saracens referee and the organisers who said that it was great to see a group of kids and club with such a fantastic attitude to the game and that our number one priority was to have fun and enjoy.

“The kids were also very excited to meet some of Saracens players, including former Westcliff youth player Jackson Wray who had a quick chat with them all.

“I think playing in front of a crowd like that was quite daunting for them but they still did fantastically well.

“Huntingdon deserved to come out on top but it was another great game between the two sides.”

Westcliff had earlier beaten Saracens 4-2 in their first game before also seeing off Huntingdon 2-1.

After that they edged out Blackheath 3-2 to win their group and then triumphed 4-2 against Folkestone in the semi-finals before being edged out 2-0 by Huntingdon in a great final.
