THE Rugby World Cup is heading to Westcliff this weekend.

The Webb Ellis Cup, which was famously held aloft by England captain Martin Johnson back in 2003, will at Westcliff Rugby Club on Saturday.

And communications manager Karen Redhead insists it will be a special day for the National League Three London & SE side.

“We have a massive day planned with the Rugby World Cup coming and it’s a huge honour for us to have it coming to the club,” said Redhead.

“We have the Lions Clubs, which are players aged between two and five, playing first and then the mini-section play after that, “We also have the youths playing and we want as many new youngsters as possible to come down to try out the sport.

“The World Cup be will here between 12pm and 3pm just before the first team’s game and everyone is welcome to come and have their picture taken with it. “

There will also be inflatable fun for youngsters on the day, plus a hog roast and barbeque.

Three bands will also be playing before and after Westcliff’s match with East Grinstead.

And Redhead is certain it will be a day to remember.

“There’s plenty of excitement going on and it will be fun for all the family,” said Redhead.

“The party will go on into the night and we’re really looking forward to it.”

The Webb Ellis Cup has been on a world-wide tour as part of an international celebration of rugby, visiting Japan, Australia, Fiji, Madagascar, South Africa, Argentina, Uruguay, USA, United Arab Emirates, Hong Kong, China, Italy, Romania, Canada, Germany and France before arriving in England earlier this week.

The Rugby World Cup gets underway on Friday September 18 with England taking on Fiji at Twickenham.
