BASILDON’S director of rugby Gary Street knows only too well what it takes to win the World Cup.

Street led England’s women’s team to glory in the competition last year.

And he believes whoever can maintain focus best will enjoy similar success this summer.

“Having won a World Cup and also lost one, I think I’m well equipped to answer what it takes and the most important thing is staying in the now and being focused,” said Street.

“There can be no distractions and all you can be thinking about is the next game.

“I remember having exactly the same conversation with Martin Johnson, who captained England to their success in 2003, and he agreed it was exactly what needed to happen.”

As a result, Street stressed the current England side should not be thinking beyond their opening game with Fiji.

And he also insisted how important it was to remain calm.

“You need to take the emotion out of everything and keep it as normal as possible,” said Street. “Anyone who came to our team hotel in the build up to our World Cup final would have heard no mention of it.

“They would’ve known we had a game against Canada coming up but that was all.

“We also did the same four day process after every game and that got us into the correct mindset.
