GARY Street was disappointed to start his spell in charge of Basildon with a 48-11 defeat to South Woodham Ferrers in London Two North East.

Street, who led England’s Women’s team to World Cup glory last summer, had been hoping to build on a promising pre-season campaign in his new surroundings.

And he was therefore frustrated to finish the game empty handed.

“It was really disappointing to be honest,” said Street.

“We had been confident about our chances after a good pre-season but everything is still very new and it will take time to gel.

“I was impressed by South Woodham Ferrers and the togetherness they had but now we need to go and bounce back.

“There’s no point just feeling sorry for ourselves. We will work hard on improving what went wrong, especially in defence, and we will need to show we can do better at Cantabrigian next weekend.”

Daniel Dieu De Bellefontaine bagged Basildon’s only try of the game while Sam Ridley kicked two penalties.

In reply, Jack Reeve bagged 18 points for Woodham while Warren Duggan bagged two tries.

Harry Keane, Liam Searles, Adam Brown and James Price also touched down.

But it was a far more frustrating start to the London Two North East season for Rochford Hundred who were seen off 13-7 at home to Sudbury.
