IT’S been a really good start to the World Cup.

The games have been very entertaining and Japan’s victory against South Africa has certainly been the highlight for me so far.

Normally the World Cup matches are slow to get going and the first few matches are a foregone conclusion in terms of their results.

But Japan’s win has brought the competition to life far earlier than usual, which is great, and for me it has to be the biggest upset there has been in World Cup history.

I can’t say I was expecting them to win but I definitely knew how well organised they would be as I had two years playing for their coach Eddie Jones at Saracens.

His attention to detail is fantastic and he’s shown that yet again here.

Normally the so called smaller nations find it tough going in the scrum against the top countries in the game.

But Japan had no issues and were also able to keep going right until the very end which can also sometimes be a problem when sides find themselves playing in games of more intensity than they’re used to.

I also played with Japan’s assistant coach Steve Borthwick at Saracens and he will have done plenty of good work with them as well, especially in the line-out.

Steve also won more than 50 caps for England in his career so he has great experience which I’m sure is proving valuable.

I WOULDN'T MAKE CHANGES FOR GAME AGAINST WELSH

ENGLAND continue their World Cup campaign by taking on Wales in a massive match on Saturday.

The starting line-up will be revealed today but if I was Stuart Lancaster, inset, I wouldn’t be making too many changes.

He may be forced to alter things slightly with Jonathan Joseph struggling with an injury.

But this game will be pretty much just the third time this team have lined up together and I think they need continuity and unity to continue to develop. If you change things around then you also open yourself up for criticism if things don’t go to plan.

Their opening game against Fiji wasn’t great in terms of performance but they got the win and the bonus point which is all that matters.

Opening matches are always tough, which we saw with South Africa and New Zealand also struggled against Argentina for quite some time.

England will need to step things up now against Wales but I’m certainly confident they will be able to do so.

VIDEO REFS ARE RUINING GAME

ONE thing which is driving me mad in the World Cup so far is the video referees.

I think it’s pathetic and it’s ruining the game.

They should only be used to pretty much determine whether or not the ball has been put down properly for a try to be allowed.

But they keep getting involved so often that it’s resulting in the match losing all momentum, especially when they keep taking so long to make their verdicts.

In my opinion, some of the incidents are showing that rugby is starting to get soft. The game is not what it used to be and for me that’s a travesty.

People are watching it now because of what’s gone on in the past and certainly not because of where it’s heading now.

Rugby is a physical game and I don’t think that should ever be allowed to change.
