ASTON Bevans-Royston bagged his first try of the season to help Southend Saxons triumph 20-11 at Worthing in National Two South on Saturday.

The 25-year-old prop forward, who was Southend’s player of the year last term, touched down after 16 minutes to help his side record another victory on the road.

But Bevans-Royston was still not completely satisfied by the performance.

“We didn't play as well as we could have done but we got the win and came away with a tough four points,” said Bevans-Royston.

“I don’t think a lot of teams will go down there and win this season so it was really pleasing.

“Our defence in particular was really good, we forced a lot of errors from them and really dug deep on our own line a few times to avoid conceding points which was really good.

“The game went quite well but there were still aspects of it we aren’t satisfied with so we will work on them in the week and look to improve.”

However, Bevans-Royston was at least happy to open his try scoring tally for the season.

“It’s always nice to score because more than anything else it allows you to dig a few other boys out who haven’t yet scored,” said the former Thurrock prop.

“But getting the win mattered most to continue what has been a pretty pleasing start.”

Southend, who avoided relegation on the final day of last season, are now eighth in the table.

But they were forced to come from behind at the weekend as Worthing went in front inside the first five minutes when Samuel Aspland-Robinson touched down for an unconverted try.

However, Bevans-Royston’s try which was converted by Brad Burr soon put Southend ahead before Worthing went back in front with a penalty from O’Hagan.

The hosts remained in front for just 60 seconds though as Southend hit back with a try from Daniel Legge.

Burr added the conversion and then also kicked a penalty to put the Saxons 17-8 ahead at half-time.

Worthing replied after the break, with a penalty from O’Hagan but, despite enjoying a spell of pressure, the hosts were unable to score a second try.

And Southend made sure of their win in the 62nd minute when Burr kicked another well taken penalty.
