BRAD Burr held his nerve to secure Southend Saxons a 17-17 draw at Launceston that he felt they did not deserve on Saturday.

The 22-year-old successfully kicked a conversion just two minutes from time to ensure the National Two South clash ended all square.

But Burr admitted Southend were lucky to avoid defeat against the division’s bottom side.

“Saturday was really disappointing,” said the talented fly-half, who has bagged 77 points in 10 games this term.

“Not in terms of structure or gameplay but we just didn't give enough.

“They wanted it more and in all honestly they deserved their first win.”

Southend, who have now drawn three games this season, were never ahead during the contest.

And they only avoided defeat at the weekend when Burr kicked a conversion from the left hand side in the 78th minute of the match.

But, despite the importance of the equalising effort, Burr did not feel nervous.

“The final kick was OK and was relatively simple compared to the previous conversion,” said Burr.

“I caught that one perfectly so it was just a case of business as usual.

“You just have to zone out and go through your standards processes.

“But it’s never pleasing not winning and we were lucky to get the draw.”

Launceston have yet to win this season but went into the match with new director of rugby Jimmy Tucker in charge for the first time.

His arrival seemed to spark the Cornwall club into life and they opened the scoring in the 11th minute with a try from Jamie Salter.

Southend hit back with a penalty from Burr but the home side remained 5-3 in front at half-time.

After the break, Launceston went further ahead with a try from Dan Lee which was converted by Fraser Honey to make the score 12-3.

Saxons soon hit back with scrum-half Jack Daly touching down and Burr again added the conversion.

However, Launceston were soon back on top and made it 17-10 with an unconverted try from Eddie McGinley.

The score stayed the same until two minutes from time when Harry Hudson touched down for the fifth time this season and Burr successfully added the conversion to secure Southend a draw.

Saxons remain eighth in the table and host 14th-placed Redingensians at Warners Bridge this weekend.
