KRIS Chesney wants Eddie Jones to succeed Stuart Lancaster as coach of England.

Lancaster stepped down from the post after failing to take England past the group stages of the recent World Cup.

And Chesney now wants Jones, who he worked with at Saracens, to take control.

“I do think Eddie is the man England should be going for,” said Chesney.

“He got Australia to the World Cup final, he helped South Africa win it and did a great job with Japan as well.

“That means he has experience which I think is needed now.

“Martin Johnson and Stuart Lancaster were both inexperienced when they got the job and so are some the other names being mentioned at the moment.

“I’ve also worked with Eddie so I know first-hand what he’s like and that he would do a good job.”

Chesney spent two seasons with Jones in charge.

And he believes the 55-year-old would also be able to bring the best out of England’s players.

“Eddie has the fear-factor I think you need as a coach,” said Chesney.

“I don’t think Stuart Lancaster had that but it’s certainly something Eddie would bring into the dressing room.

“When you go out on to the pitch, Eddie lets you know your roles and what is expected of you.

“If you don’t do it then you have to face his wrath.”

Jones is now the bookmakers’ favourite to get the job and become the first foreign coach to be put in charge of England.

But Chesney does not believe Jones’ nationality should become an issue.

“It’s like team selection and you have to select the best person for every role,” said the 41-year-old.

“At the World Cup we made a mistake by not selecting the best players available to us and we can’t afford to do the same with the coach now.”
