SOUTHEND Saxons’ home struggles continued with a 33-11 defeat to Cambridge in National Two South on Saturday.

The setback meant Southend have triumphed just once in their last seven outings at Warners Bridge.

Saxons’ number eight Harry Hudson, who bagged a try for Chris Green’s side, was left disappointed by the latest loss.

“It was frustrating how it happened because we got back to 19-11 and had the momentum with us but then they punished every mistake we made,” said Hudson.

“Cambridge were the better team and deserved the win, so fair play to them.

“But I’ve no idea why the home results haven’t been going our way.

“The next home game we have is in the new year, so we will go into it with a fresh start and look to make a change.

“However, next week is an important game at Bishop’s Stortford and that’s all we’re focusing on at the moment.

“There are no easy games in this league and they’re typically a good side, so we will have to prepare well and have a good week of training.”

Southend, who slipped to ninth in the standings following the defeat, will also be looking to bounce back to winning ways against Bishop’s Stortford.

However, they were initially on top on Saturday and went in front after just two minutes with a penalty from fly-half Brad Burr.

Cambridge soon hit back with a try from their own fly-half Gerhard Boshoff which he also then converted to put the visitors 7-3 up.

Burr soon cut their lead with another penalty but Cambridge replied with a try from Alexander Moon to lead 12-6 at half-time.

After the break, James Stokes also touched down for a try Boshoff converted to put Cambridge 19-6 in front.

But Southend soon got back into the game with Hudson’s sixth try of the season.

Saxons could not build on his effort though and Cambridge immediately raced clear with Stephen Hipwell scoring a try which was converted by James Stokes.

Lawrence Hutchinson then also touched down and Stokes again added the extras to complete a victory which sent Cambridge back to the top of the table.
