CRAIG Strachan wants Southend Saxons to learn lessons from National Two South leaders Cambridge this weekend.

Cambridge are close to sealing promotion back into National One North from where they were relegated three seasons ago.

And Strachan is now keen for Southend to also be able to bounce back their impending demotion into National Three London & SE.

“Cambridge have notoriously been strong and have been looking to get back into National One since they were relegated three seasons ago,” said the prop forward.

“Hopefully we can model ourselves on their approach next year by getting back up.

“But we still have matches left this season and of course we’re expecting a very tough one tomorrow.

“We have shown at times this season that we can do well against anybody.

“The start of the season and a win against Henley when they were flying at the top last season shows this but we know we’ll need to do that again tomorrow.”

Southend make the trip sitting second bottom in the standings, needing a minor miracle to stay up.

Saxons will need to take maximum points from their remaining three matches and also hope other results go their way during the run in.

But it relegation remains a foregone conclusion, much to the frustration of Strachan.

“This season has been tough for everyone,” said the 23-year-old.

“Nobody likes losing especially when we know we can do better. “It is more disappointing than anything else as we know we aren't playing to full potential. “

However, Southend will be seeking to improve in their final three games.

And Strachan believes Saxons will be as determined as ever to succeed.

“We will approach these last games like all the others,” said Strachan.

“We are athletes and no athlete ever goes into any sporting event wanting anything other than to win.

“These last games will hopefully allow us to show our actual ability and hopefully we can get some good results.”

Southend have no new injury concerns for tomorrow’s game but have experienced back row Kris Chesney available again.
