KEVIN Blackmore is confident a rejuvenated Basildon Rugby Club can bounce back from their season of struggle.

The head coach took control of the first team towards the start of last season but could not stop Basildon suffering relegation.

But Blackmore is already putting plans in place to ensure the forthcoming campaign – in London Three North East – will be far more successful for his side.

“Last season has gone now and we’re focusing on what’s coming up to make sure next year is a good one for us,” said Blackmore.

“We didn’t really ever have a solid base to build on from last year but the players are already back in training for the next challenge and it’s all looking good.

“We’re making sure we get the balance right between being a community rugby club and doing things correctly.

“And, if the workrate and effort the group are already showing can be maintained, then I think we could be in for a really good season and hopefully promotion.”

The players already in place have just started a 10-week strength and conditioning programme with Fit Performance in Crays Hill.

But Blackmore, who is in process of bolstering his squad, will be sticking to traditional values of the sport.

“We are aiming to develop the performance and sporting side but we’re using old school rugby values to do that,” said Blackmore.

“Our social secretary Robin Groves is a key member of the team that’s driving the improvement and he’s organising a tour abroad in 2017, which we haven’t done for a number of years.

“The committee have also been extremely supportive of the new initiatives and we’re doing all we can to move forward.”

With that in mind Blackmore appointed Conran Clark as the new captain, Cesar Florez as assistant coach and Elliott Keefe as player manager.

Basildon are also holding an open day on Sunday, July 17.

It is taking place at the Basildon Sporting Village Bowl with registration taking place at 12.30pm.
