A BLOSSOMING rugby revolution will be gunning for success at the Essex Charity Sevens this weekend.

RED – which stands for Rugby Every Day – was launched last year by five local enthusiasts of the sport.

And they have now linked up with successful sevens side the Wailers to enter a number of teams in various competitions, much to the delight of one of the founder directors, Jack Reeve.

“Within our launch we partnered with one of the most successful sevens teams in history, the Wailers who are now known as the RED Wailers,” said Reeve, who also plays for South Woodham Ferrers.

“From this we have developed our own sevens strategy and look forward to having the RED Roses and RED Rockets run out for the first time on Saturday at the Charity Sevens at Bancroft.”

The competition will be the second in quick succession for RED after they made the final of the St Albans Floodlit event last Friday.

And this has all evolved just a year after the company was first put together.

“It was formed between five friends – four from Woodham and one from Southend - with different skills and qualities to grow a rugby brand,” explained Reeve.

“Upon further research we found there is a real need for rugby clubs to get great quality kit on quick turnaround and we want to be a rugby brand for everyone.

“Sevens is like T20 cricket and it is the fastest growing form of rugby in the men’s and women’s games.

“It is quick, played at a high tempo and something many people enjoy to watch so it’s great to be able to play a part in it.”

Mark Billings – who recently ended his lengthy spell with Southend to join Rochford Hundred – has already lined up for the side.

This weekend they will also be coached by South Woodham’s and Essex RFU’s head coach Tony Woods and Southend Saxons winger Danny Cleare, who is director of rugby at Seevic College.

Joining them will be the director of rugby from Chinnor, Matt Williams – who lives in Rayleigh – and former Harlequins and Ireland international Mel Deane.

Scotland sevens international Russell Weir is also expected to figure.
