THE ALF 10s proved to be another big hit at Westcliff Rugby on Saturday.

The tournament is the flagship event for the Aaron Lewis Foundation (ALF), a charity which was set up in memory of Lieutenant Aaron Lewis.

The Rochford man and former Westcliff player died while serving his country in Afghanistan in December 2008, just 11 days after his 26th birthday.

And the tournament held in his memory continues to thrive with a record 16 teams taking part at the weekend.

The ALF team triumphed against last year’s winners the Phallus Warriors to cap and entertaining and fun filled day of rugby at the Gables which left Patric Redding, one of the event organisers, delighted.

“The day was so successful some teams have already planned their return and signed up already,” said Redding.

“We had 16 teams, including one from France battling it out in the name of Aaron Lewis and we hope teams from across Europe will now hear how successful it is.

“With the airport nearby it would be great to make this an international tournament.

“But it’s growing all the time and, although the money is being totalled up, I’m confident we’ve smashed last year’s figure which is great.”

The 16 teams began the day in four pools of four teams before advancing into various competition in 10 aside matches which lasted 10 minutes per half.

And Redding was keen to thank everyone who helped make the day so successful.

“This year was the eighth time we’ve held the event and it took a year to plan,” said Redding.

“The whole club chipped in with volunteers manning the bar and food stalls.

“Local music acts also supported the event and numerous sponsors came forward to help us cover costs for items such as the portable toilets.

“It’s fantastic how everyone gets involved and I cannot believe how a four team event in 2009 has now grown to include 16 teams.

“The efforts of those involved is really appreciated and thanks should go to the London Society of Referees as without them rugby cannot happen.

“Since its conception we always promised ourselves we’d make it bigger and better each year and we're proud to say we achieved that again.

“It was another great day.”
