WESTCLIFF’S Rick Compton feels tomorrow’s local derby at Southend will be a fantastic show-piece for local rugby.

Westcliff head to Warners Bridge looking to shock their near neighbours.

But Compton believes both teams will be desperate to come out on top.

“The two clubs will have objectives and goals for the season that go beyond the outcome of this game but both teams and their supporters will be desperate to secure bragging rights until the return fixture in December,” said Compton, Westcliff’s director of rugby.

“The game this weekend will be the first between the two clubs in league competition and I am sure it will be a great show piece for local rugby.

“In all sport local rivalries tend to produce extra excitement and interest and it’s been clear for some time that the game on Saturday will lack for neither.

Westcliff avoided relegation from National Three London & SE last season after financial problems saw East Grinstead drop out of the league.

They kicked off the new campaign with a 19-13 defeat against Hertford but spirits still remain high.

“We will make the short trip full of confidence, intent and purpose,” said Compton.

“Morale is high and we’re all looking forward to the game.

“We can’t wait to get out there.”
