CHRIS Vaughan has called for Southend Saxons to become more consistent - starting with tomorrow’s game against Guernsey.

Southend moved up to seventh in the National Three London & SE standings after a 20-12 win at Chichester last weekend.

And Vaughan - who plays at centre - is now looking for another solid display when Guernsey make the long trip to Warners Bridge this weekend.

“I think it’s crucial for the team that we build on last week’s win at Chichester,” said Vaughan.

“We need to start getting some consistency in our performances “But it is hard to do that when the team keeps changing through injury.

“We picked up a couple of injuries in key positions in last week’s game so I would imagine the team will be shuffled around again.

“However, we just have to get on with it and do the best we can to make sure we get a good result.”

Southend have injury doubts surrounding kicker Rob Baynes and centre Tyson Ngaluafe ahead of this weekend’s game.

But Vaughan is not too sure what to expect from tomorrow’s opposition.

“Having never played them before or heard much about them I’m really not sure what to expect if I’m honest,” said Vaughan.

“However, going on their results I’m not expecting an easy one.”

Guernsey are currently fifth in the table having won five of their seven matches so far this season.

But, as Southend look to beat them this weekend, they will again be under the stewardship of interim director of rugby Danny Cleare.

And Vaughan - who has been a long-term team-mate of Cleare’s - is already enjoying the new look set up.

“I think it’s great having him in charge,” said Vaughan.

“With a nickname like Beero you wouldn’t imagine him to be very professional but it’s actually quite the opposite!

“He takes it very seriously and I’m sure he will do a great job.”

Cleare won his first game in charge of the club last weekend and was also among the try scorers as Southend ground out a narrow victory at Chichester.

But Vaughan is refusing to set targets on the remainder of the season and is solely focusing on Saturday’s game, which kicks off earlier than normal at 2pm.

“At the moment we are just taking it week by week,” said Vaughan.

“We are just focusing on giving good performances rather than anything else.

“Hopefully the results will come if we can do that and we can start to creep up the table.”

Southend head into tomorrow’s game eight points below Guernsey with four wins in seven games.
