JAID Wiltshire was unable to stop Southend Saxons suffering a knock-out blow against Dorking in National Three London & SE on Saturday.

The winger touched down on his return from concussion but was still left feeling frustrated as Saxons suffered a 27-10 defeat at Warners Bridge.

“The game was very scrappy at times and it was obviously disappointing not to get the result we wanted,” said Wiltshire.

“The things we were trying to do never really stuck and we maybe weren’t doing the right things at the right time.

“For myself personally it was good to be back playing after missing out with concussion last week.

“I was knocked out in the game against Guernsey so had to wait to be able to come back and it was good to get a try in my first game back but it doesn’t really mean as much when you lose.

“Now we need to get back to winning ways so we’re in a strong place in the league for when we come back after Christmas.”

Southend’s defeat was their second in succession after a slow start which saw Fraser Mosley barge his way through for a try which was converted by Matthew Noble inside the opening five minutes.

However, Saxons soon hit back when a break from Potu Leavasa resulted in Ricki Gould and Iain Meads linking up before blood replacement Wiltshire dashed across the line to touch down.

But Dorking were in no mood to let their lead slip and they went further ahead when Noble teed up Mosley to score before a third try followed on the stroke of half-time to lead 19-5 at the break.

At the start of the second half Dorking added a fourth try to make sure of their win before Southend started to fight back.

However, the Saxons - who handed a debut to new signing Jack Reeve after he signed from South Woodham Ferrers - failed to take the chances coming their way before finally being able to score.

The try came when Dorking were down to 14 men and saw Meads being able to weave his way though to score.

But Dorking soon replied with a penalty to make sure of the win which frustrated Southend skipper Marcus Bloomberg.

“We didn’t really get into it,” said Bloomberg.

“We made some defensive errors that allowed them to score some easy tries.

“We did have some good set pieces, but we did not stick to our structures and didn’t do the basics well so we will need to bounce back against Sutton because we’ve lost two in a row.

Southend are now eighth in the table.
