WESTCLIFF scrum half Jake Spivey has spoken of his delight at being selected for the London and South of England trials.

The 18-year-old – who attends Seevic College – progressed after impressing for Essex.

And the youngster said it was an honour to have been chosen.

“At first when I got called up to play for Essex that was an honour alone,” said the Rayleigh based Spivey.

“I had three grading games to play in and from there they selected people to go forward for the South of England trials.

“But when I got the email to say I had been chosen I was just speechless.

“I couldn’t actually believe I got selected but after a few days I started to embrace it and now I’m just focusing on being ready for the actual trial which is in January.”

Spivey will continue to train and play for both Westcliff and Seevic in the build up to the trial.

And he would love to be able to make it through.

“To get in the squad and to play against the likes of Ireland and other nations would be a dream come true,” said Spivey.

“I couldn’t think of anything better and right now I also feel that with the help of my club and college I am on really bringing my A game and playing the best I can.

“I’m still developing and that’s why I’m always working to be a better player.

“But to say I’m excited is an understatement as it would be amazing to go that far and hopefully further in the future if I’m successful this time round at the trials.”

And progression in the trials would also continue Spivey’s fine start to the campaign.

“The season so far has been amazing,” said Spivey.

“At Seevic we haven’t been beaten this season and we’re two wins from Twickenham.

“We also have a chance to win the league, the Essex Cup, the nationals and the national sevens.

“I haven’t played as much for Westcliff but with the under 18s we’ve won six from six so it’s going well and long may it continue.”

Seevic’s hooker Jordan Dyer has also been chosen for the South of England trial along with Thurrock Rugby Club’s Ben Northfield.

The full-back was spotted by one of the Hertfordshire coaches while playing for his college Oaklands Wolves.

And he impressed enough when lining up for Hertfordshire to be invited to the trial.
