WESTCLIFF’S Joe Vandermolen is eager to experience what he believes will be the first closely fought local derby of his career this weekend.

The experienced number eight looks set to be a key figure in the clash against his former Southend side at the Gables.

And he cannot wait to take to the pitch.

“I missed the first game between the two clubs earlier on in the season as I was still in contract at my old club but this fixture has always been on my radar,” said Vandermolen.

“I’m looking forward to it in a good way because it’s not often you get the chance to play in a local derby.

“I don’t think I’ve ever experienced a closely matched rival game like this before in my career and both teams will come out fighting but I’m expecting a tough game.”

Vandermolen, who started his career at Westcliff before going on to play for Southend, Bedford and Chinnor, returned to the Gables in late September.

And he has been happy to help the team turn their season around with four wins in their last six outings.

“We have grown and grown week in week out and I expect the same this weekend playing at home in front of our fans,” said Vandermolen.

“Some of the results have been great and it’s been a nice feeling.”

However, Vandermolen almost ended up back at Southend.

“It was always close between the clubs,” said the former Belfairs High School pupil.

“But with my situation and Westcliff’s situation being similar I just went with my gut instinct in the end.”
