CANVEY Island saw off Clacton 31-5 in Essex One B on Saturday, much to the delight of coach Jay Breading.

The victory enabled second placed Canvey to move six points clear of Clacton who sit third.

And coach Breading was full of praise for the display.

“I was pleased with the performance and our forwards were dominant,” said Breading.

“I was also pleased with the way the backs, who we had to shuffle around due to fly-half Jon Edwards and centre Jason Lansley being unavailable, responded to the change.”

Canvey will now go into the second half of the season in the Essex Premier Division which will see the top four from Essex One A and Essex B come together.

The Islanders went in front at the weekend when a quickly-taken penalty led to Harry Atkins touching down for an unconverted try.

Moments later, flanker Brett Smith was also able to score before winger Tom Dulieu bagged Canvey’s third try which was converted by fly-half Damon Cooper just before half-time.

After the break, Jack Chandler added another try which Cooper was able to convert before Clacton hit back with an unconverted try.

However, Canvey had the final say with a penalty try which was converted by Cooper to make the final score-line 31-5.
