GEORGE Griffiths wants Southend Saxons to boost their survival hopes with a shock win at Guernsey this weekend.

The 17-year-old winger has helped 12th placed Southend triumph in their last two games.

And he is now keen to make sure Saxons make it three victories in a row to move closer to their relegation rivals.

“The game this weekend is key as we want to try and get another win and carry on the way we have been performing,” said the Seevic College student.

“I’m expecting it to be a hard game because Guernsey are a strong outfit and I’m sure they will be up for it.

“But we’ve won the last two and it felt so good to win against Chichester at the weekend.

“It gives us more momentum heading into the weekend but every point is crucial for us at the moment.”

Griffiths, who has started Southend’s last five games, was among the try scorers in Saturday’s 21-12 win.

However, Saxons head coach Danny Cleare is expecting a tougher test this weekend against a Guernsey side sitting fifth in the table.

“This will be a really difficult game,” said Cleare.

“Everyone you speak to says they are a different beast at home and not many teams win there.

“They have a big dominant pack, with quick backs and they traditionally like to put width into their game.

“With the travel and early departure it’s going to make it a really difficult afternoon but we’re going there with a bit of momentum behind us after two good wins.

“There is a really positive vibe among the players and we do feel like we can get the result we need even though our injury list is ridiculous.

“But it’s part of the game and you have to deal with it.”
