ROSS Merrick will be gunning for more glory when Westcliff host bottom of the table Amersham & Chiltern in National Three London & SE tomorrow.

Victory in the rearranged clash could see Westcliff move up to seventh in the standings.

And Merrick is keen to make the most of the opportunity.

“This is our game in hand due to rescheduling so it’s a great opportunity to earn some valuable points and move up in the table,” said the winger.

“There is a good mentality here at the moment and we have been targeting this block of games.”

However, Merrick has also warned his side not to take victory for granted despite Amersham having lost 18 of their 19 games so far this season.

“Everyone knows by now that in this league if you get complacent it costs you so that won’t be happening,” said Merrick, whose Westcliff side are currently ninth in the table.

“Everyone understands what this game means so it’s important we get the win.”

Westcliff - who are 15 points above the drop zone - will be heading into the game seeking a third successive win after beating both Guildford and Colchester in their last two outings.

And Merrick is keen to secure a successful end to the season and make sure Westcliff are still playing at this level next term.

“We are under no illusions we still need points to be here next year but we want to keep building and developing,” said Merrick.

“Survival is obviously the key goal, but we will push to last minute of this season and see where we can end up.

“For us - coming off the back of a very difficult year last year - it’s huge for the squad and club as a whole to be where we are.

“This is the level we want to be competing at.”
